Marijuana prohibition proponents completely ignores the fact that (in addition to keeping the price up) using government violence and/ threat of government violence is futile attempt to legislate fundamental Christian morality. Moral-based prohibition is disguised tyranny. It has never worked, is not working now, and it produces consequences far worse than the activities that are being prohibited. Alcohol prohibition of the 1920s and marijuana prohibition today are both clear examples of this.

Morality preaching Nixon believed that marijuana was part of a
left wing, hippie, Communist plot to destroy America.

1) Crime Legalizing Marijuana will cause an increase in crime.

Exactly the opposite is true. Over fifty percent (some statists say about seventy percent) of all crime in marijuana related. Here's how to dramatically reduce crime: Take the cash out of the cash crop!

Legalizing marijuana will drop the price from about $375 per ounce to about $40 per ounce and make it available to any adult who wants it. With low price and no customers, criminals would have to go elsewhere of get a legitimate job.

How come nobody robs grocery stores to obtain alcohol. Why isn't there a black market for beer? Because those who want alcohol can buy it legally at a fair price.

2) Gateway Drug Marijuana is a gateway drug -- Legalizing marijuana is slippery slope leading to addiction to heroin, cocaine, and to other extremely harmful drugs.

The evidence (from places like Portugal and Holland) does not support this conclusion. This argument is based on the logic called, "After, therefore because of."

To declare that a sequence of events has an after therefore because of relationship (a cause and effect relationship) without additional proof is fractured and faulty logic.

If this logic were actually correct, then we should also prohibit the use other mind altering substances that commonly precede a person's addiction to cocaine, or heroin, et cetera, but outlawing nicotine, and alcohol is neither reasonable nor possible.

The real stepping stones to addictive behavior are nicotine and alcohol. Nicotine tends to reduce one's ability to resist addiction. Type "nicotine gateway drug" into any internet search engine and you'll find several research studies that reach this conclusion.

As long as we're playing the after therefore because of game , what about milk? How many hard core addicts have never drunk milk? What about the misuse of dozens of legal drugs? Do they lead to cocaine or heroin use?

What causes so many corporate executive to become addicted to Profits at Any Price or to high stakes gambling? Perhaps we should outlaw unbridled corporate power. .

3) Addiction If marijuana and other presently-illegal substances become legal, more people will become drug addicts.

The overwhelming evidence from places like Holland and Portugal prove this assertion to be completely false.

The research findings of Doctor Gabor Mate indicate that the propensity to become addicted to something as an adult, is primarily a function fear and stress in early childhood. When one adds teenage use of nicotine and alcohol to someone with excessive childhood fear and stress, you have an addict in the making.

4) Health Risks Legalizing marijuana will increase health risks.

Quite the opposite is true. Because marijuana is still illegal, there are presently, no health and safety standard for the marijuana users or for other illegal drug users. The marijuana that comes from illegal sources can have any number of dangerous chemical sprayed on it by the criminal, marijuana growers. Legalization of marijuana will bring with it health and safety standards. Hopefully, those standards will become informative and not dictatorial.

This claim is often stated as Smoking marijuana is a health risks. Actually they are correct. Why? Because the act of putting anything into your body that you purchased on the illegal black market is a health risk. If you buy something form a criminal, you have no idea what you are buying. The dangers related to marijuana will be dramatically reduced by legalization.

First, because production will have health and safety standards. Second, marijuana legalization will bring with it an entirely new way to use marijuana. The active ingredient, THC, will be separated from the multitude of other chemicals the the users take in by smoking marijuana. The THC. will be ingested. Smoking MJ will become archaic to those who have access to the pill, or tablet, or liquid drops, or in whatever new form in which THC will become available. Health risks will then be only those related to ingesting THC.

5) The Morality Peddlers "We have a deeply-felt, moral obligation not to make things worse.

This attitude is based on the false assumption that legalizing marijuana will "make things worse." To see the fallacy in this argument, all you have to do is look at the long list at the top of this page which describes the problems resulting from marijuana prohibition. You might also examine the history of alcohol prohibition to see the absurdity of making fundamental Christian morality into the law of the land. Check the Internet, There are hundreds of excellent descriptions and stories of that era.

Apparently, the prohibitionists believe that there's something inherently evil about the recreational use of marijuana that not found in nicotine and alcohol, or in football, or in hockey or in a multitude of other violent and/or dangerous activities that are considered to be recreational pastimes. Some would-be doo-goodres declare that marijuana is the "gateway to hell."

There isn't anything inherently evil in marijuana use, but even if there were, the prohibitionists still have no right to use police violence to control the private behavior of consenting adults. We might ask them, "What's in you that makes you think your job is to control other people's lives?"

"Marijuana is dangerous, poisonous and the gateway to hell."

We have no idea on what evidence the speaker of the above statement (a clerical-collar wearer) based his claims.

The only thing we've heard that is even remotely close is the assertion that legalizing marijuana will let stoned teenagers lose on our streets and highways. Because the evidence form Holland and Portugal indicate that legalizing marijuana does not increase it's use, we don't know where these stoned teenagers are going to come from.

6) The Wild West Legalizing Marijuana will turn the state (California) into "the wild west."

Nobody that I know of has defined what is meant by "the wild west." The implication is that legalization of marijuana will produce wild and abandoned criminal activity. If that's the definition, then we have that already. Legalizing marijuana would dramatically reduce the present "wild west." (See the prohibition arguments in the first section above about crime reduction.

7) Marijuana Problems Legalizing Marijuana will create more problems.

This is a typical public belief of mindless people who listen only to the official propaganda and are completely ignorant of what the evidence tells us about this issue. Instead of creating more problems, legalizing marijuana will solve a vast number of very serious, present-day problems that are the direct result of its prohibition. See the list at the top of this page describing the problems resulting from marijuana prohibition.

For example, under the present system, criminals have about 150 billion dollars every year from illegal marijuana sales. With that much money, spending a few million here, a few million there, and a few million more somewhere else to buy off police and government officials is all in a day's work. Legalizing marijuana would eliminate that secret, illegal money and dramatically reduce police and political corruption.

8) Medical Marijuana Value Marijuana has no proven medical value.

This is a case of intentional deception. Note the adjective "proven" which precedes and defines the words "medical value." The statement strongly implies, but does not say that marijuana has no medical value. What they are technically saying is that there are no official government studies that confirm marijuana's medical value. But they don't say that.

This gives the person hearing this statement a false and intentionally deceptive message -- Marijuana has no medical value. This is a boldly and deliberately created a false statement designed to fool the listener.

Marijuana, itself, has thousands or proven values and medical marijuana has at least a dozen very important and significant values that have been indicated by thousands of medical marijuana users and confirmed by hundreds of medical professionals.

9) Medical MJ Dispensaries and Crime Medical Marijuana dispensaries attract criminals.

Is there something inherently evil about marijuana, or are marijuana-related crimes committed because of prohibition against marijuana? Where is cause? Is it in the marijuana, itself, or is it in the prohibition.

Prohibition raises the price of marijuana to about ten times its free market value. It's the incredibly high sale to cost-of-production ratio that attracts criminals, not the marijuana. Any product that has an extremely high profit margin because it' illegal is going to attract criminals. In the 1920s, the prohibition of alcohol raised its price and attracted criminals.

Charging an excessively high tax on cigarettes has attracted criminals. In several states in the eastern United States, here's a huge underground, criminal-run black market for untaxed cigarettes.

During the alcohol prohibition era of the 1920's, thousands of criminal committed hundreds of thousands of crimes related to the sale alcohol and they did so only because the sale of alcohol was illegal and sold for excessively high prices. Prior to prohibition, there was no alcohol-produced crime. When prohibition ended, the alcohol related crimes also ended.

Prohibition is the cause of crime, and ending prohibition is the cure! More than fifty percent of all crime is marijuana-related. More that fifty percent of all crime will end when prohibition ends.

You might also note that many people died in the 1920s in the violence or by drinking alcohol that was intentionally laced with poison. Today, 2011, I can safely go into any major, California, grocery store and buy as much liquor I want. I can buy it at a fair market price knowing that the product I'm buying is what the label says it is.

10) To Decriminalize Marijuana By decriminalizing marijuana, you are promoting its use.

This so-called reason is peddled to the public because it sounds good to those who don't bother to examine the evidence. Here's the same logic applied to cliff diving, which is far more dangerous than using marijuana. "Because it legal for thrill seekers to jump off high cliffs this means the we are promoting this dangerous behavior."

11) In Response to 74 years of anti-Marijuana Prohibition Failure -- "Give Up! Hell no! We need to intensify our effort.

You've probably all already heard the definition of insanity -- "Doing the same thing over and over again and/or doing the same thing harder and expecting a different result."

Doing the same thing over and over again and doing the same thing harder is exactly what the marijuana prohibitionists have been doing for years. That's exactly what they're doing now and that's exactly what they propose doing in the future.

Since the anti-marijuana war began, they've spent 600 billion dollars fighting marijuana. This year they're spending an additional 13.7 billion.

World-wide, there are 190 million marijuana users. In the United States , over 40 percent of the people have used marijuana at least once and there are over 11 million regular users of marijuana.

In times of a budget crisis and in the face of demands for cutting wasteful spending, nobody even mentioned ending the war on Marijuana.

12) Legalization Wont Work in U.S. Even though decriminalization is working well in Portugal, it wont work here in the United States.

This a nonsense argument. The Prohibitionists say that the U.S is too big and too diverse for decriminalization to work here. That's like the Folgers Coffee Company that used to promote their coffee as better than its competitors because it was mountain grown. The advertisers ignored the fact that all coffee is mountain grown.

Portugal is an integral part of highly diverse European culture, and it's working well there. So let's take a portion of America and see it it works in just one state.

Whether the prohibitionist like it or not, California is about to become the test state here in America. It's not a question of will California decriminalize marijuana, it's only a question of when it will happen.

13) Richard ("I'm not a Crook") Nixon's Anti-Marijuana Paranoia Nixon was the granddaddy of extreme MJ paranoia and a creator of one of the most destructive policies ever to be put into federal law.

The Nixon anti-marijuana paranoia is extreme and extensive. If you listen to or read about the Nixon Whitehouse tapes, it soon becomes obvious the he was a homophobic, anti-sexual, anti-marijuana, anti-Semite. According to his logic, Jews, promiscuous sex, drugs, communists sympathizers, and homosexuals were about to destroy America.

"All people who use drugs are aberrant, deviant, criminals and should be treated as such."

"Immorality, in general, is the enemy of a strong society."

"Communists and left wingers are pushing marijuana. They're trying to destroy us."

The Bottom Line The anti-Marijuana war is not about marijuana, it's about money.

The Marijuana prohibitionists are defending their multi-billion-dollar source of secret money. Their history is filled with lies and failure. Their present success is based on violence, intimidation, threats, blackmail, bribery, and financial payoffs.

For those whose financial well-being is, in one way or another, tied to prohibition, the anti MJ war is a success. But that success can only be for the short-term because prohibition has a built in Crash & Burn. In the long-run, everybody loses.

Here are the only two anti-marijuana argument that actually makes any sense at all:

1) Because half past tomorrow will get you to the day before yesterday, marijuana should remain illegal.

2) Because water is wet, therefore marijuana should remain illegal.

There is still another aspect of this controversy that is being completely ignored. That ignored aspect is the unproven assumption that marijuana possession and/or its use is so bad that we must use government violence or threat of government violence to prevent people from possessing and/or using marijuana.

Is there is something inherently-evil about marijuana? Is there is something inherently-evil about about possessing, or smoking or ingesting marijuana? There is no evidence to support such a claim and yet it's the primary publically-presented reason for criminalizing its possession and use.

This claim is actually the smokescreen used by The Powers That Be to hide the real reason for continuing marijuana prohibition. This claim is used because the would-be-do-gooders buy this reason in the same way they mindlessly buy the anti-gay rhetoric and the forced motherhood propaganda.

Like everything in life, it can be abused and misused.
